" When I was three years old, an event made me aware that life is finite.

How does life end? What is death?

Maybe I will never be able to find the answers.

But at least I understood that life and death coexist. When I was curious about death, I realised that surprises in life are infinite.

Live a life that is ephemeral yet sparkle brightly. That is my life motto.

I hope to be a person who cherishes the present and look forward to the end without dismay."

— Arisa Nakahara

Japan | B. 1984

In her portraits, Arisa Nakahara filters the techniques of traditional Japanese ink wash painting through a contemporary cosmopolitan woman sensibility. By weaving the cultural influences of the East and West together, Nakahara creates imageries that build from the foundation of traditional Japanese paintings and shed them in the light of the present.

Many of Nakahara’s works drew influence from her personal experience, approaching through the lens of a contemporary woman in the world, creating motifs and themes that reflect the lived experience whilst breaking the limitations of the traditional genre.

Born in 1984 in Okinawa, Japan, Nakahara earned a BFA and MFA in Japanese Painting from Tokyo University of the Arts. The artist is currently based in Tokyo.
